What is Katonah Yoga®?
Katonah Yoga® is an extraordinary approach to yoga practice. Developed over more than 50 years by Egyptian-American Nevine Michaan, it is a Hatha-based method drawing from the Iyengar tradition, Kundalini Yoga, Taoism, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Sacred Geometry, and Nevine’s own unique mystical pragmatism, perspective, and skillful use of metaphor.
The practice emphasizes referencing the archetype of each pose, leveraging the skill of measurement through vision and the feedback of props, and prioritizing joint health and longevity over purely muscular effort. Through the embodied study of fit, fold, and function, practitioners explore the body as a multidimensional structure—using breath and imagination as essential tools to inform and transform each asana.
Katonah Yoga® is challenging, illuminating, and sometimes mystifying. It treats yoga as an alchemical practice—more magical than medical—seeking to make the unconscious conscious. Through a syncretic combination of asana, pranayama, hands-on adjustments, prop work, theory, discussion, and metaphor, the practice reveals what has been hiding in plain sight, in service of a well-rounded, resilient, and responsible life.
Katonah Yoga® is for every body—students and teachers alike—while offering unmistakably precise technique and vision to those who instruct or guide others.
All levels are welcome; no prior experience with Katonah Yoga® is required.
Session 1: Friday January 16, 3–5 pm
FOUNDATIONS: the Body as a House & the Third Foot
The function and safety of any building rely on the intelligence and health of its foundation. The same is true of the body. Here, your foundation includes not only the feet, legs, and pelvis, but also how you inhabit them with breath and mind.
Join us for an enlightening two hours as we explore simple yet transformative technique to inhabit, inform, and reform your foundation—for your body and your life—through Katonah Yoga® asana and metaphor, guided by the visual map of the Magic Square.
Session 2: Friday February 27, 3–5 pm
MEDIATING POLARITY: the Third Strand
Once the foundation is established, we can explore extension—the vertical lift through the spine to the crown, supported by an awakened and stable base. As you mediate the polarities of left and right, up and down, front and back, past and future, the unseen yet living centre—you—comes into view: the Third Strand.
The fluidity of Katonah Yoga® Sun, Moon, and Water Salutations channels awareness in ways that agitate, stimulate, soothe, cool, and enchant. You are neither solar nor lunar; you are stellar. Practice is one way to access, embody, and celebrate that truth.
Session 3: Friday March 27, 3–5 pm
VOLUME: the Third Hand
Your Third Hand is your immunity, your resilience—your capacity to roll with the punches life delivers, to bounce rather than break. This is tensile strength.
We find and fuel this dynamic centre by cross-referencing and reframing the trunk of the body. Pole work and innovative variations on familiar asana introduce deeper meaning through practice, inviting you to see your hands, wrists, shoulders, collarbones, and back in a whole new way.
Session 4: Friday May 1, 3–5 pm
LONGEVITY: Your Spherical Nature & the Third Eye
When we first encounter yoga practice, the joy of discovery can lead us to believe the practice is an end in itself. It is—but it is also a means to an end. As the body ages and the “freebies” of youth are reclaimed, this truth becomes deeply personal.
Practice is for your life. It is for the health of the house that is both body and mind. Learn techniques that restore, recharge, renew, and reform for optimal function over time. To drive the vehicle of your body through the joyride of your life, you need to know how to fill the tank—practical wisdom for a lifetime.
Attendance at all four sessions provides 8 bankable hours toward Katonah Yoga® Certification. If you’re interested in applying these hours toward certification, please reach out to Isabelle for further details.
